Chairman Tien's congratulatory message to President-elect Joseph R. Biden, VP-elect Kamala Harris

12/16/2020

The US presidential election Electoral College vote took place on December 14, with the results showing that the Democratic party candidate Joseph R. Biden received 306 votes, surpassing the 270-threshold to be elected. After confirmation by the Congress on January 6, 2020, he is set to become the 46th President of the United States of America. Dr. Tien Hung-mao, Chairman and President of the Institute for National Policy Research extends his sincere congratulations to the President-elect Joe Biden, and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

President Tien and Mrs. Tien had the honor to host a dinner reception on August 6, 2001, for the visiting US Senate Foreign Relations Committee delegation led by then-Chairman Senator Joe Biden and Mrs. Biden. Dr. Tien was the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of China (Taiwan) at that time. At the welcome dinner, the Tiens and Bidens had delightful conversations on matters of mutual interest. Senator Biden's eldest son Joseph Biden III and President Tien's daughter Wendy Tien happened to hold similar types of positions at the Department of Justice in Washington DC. Such unexpected coincidence provided additional subjects for the already warm conversations. This event is to be remembered as a sign of important friendship, especially now Mr. Biden has become president-elect. The delegation's visit took place during the first rotation of presidential power in Taiwan from the Kuomintang (KMT) to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), chaired by Mr. Chen Shui-bian, who was elected president in 2000. President Chen also received the entire delegation on the same trip.
